Rehab Scottsdale Takes a Look at Overdose Stats
Distressing statistics is one of the reasons why rehab Scottsdale programs are so vital. According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 70,200 Americans died as a result of drug overdoses in 2017. This is an alarming number, as the number of deaths in 1999 was 16,849. That's a 2-fold increase in a decade. And in Arizona, recent research found that opioid-involved deaths rose over 75% from just 2013 to 2017. Enrolling in rehab is the key to helping Arizonans reclaim their lives from dependence and addiction.
Overdose Stats Arizona: Numbers Don't Lie
Overdoses and fatalities from overdoses are the core of the opioid crisis. With opioid-involved deaths increasing by nearly 80% in just four years, the death rate is approximately 13.5 deaths per 100,000 people. What's scary is the significant increase in fatalities that involved synthetic opioids other than methadone. These were mainly fentanyl-related increases and were the greatest of all death increases jumping from 36 deaths in 2012 to 267 deaths in 2017. Heroin-involved deaths during that same five years more than tripled, going from 101 deaths to 334 deaths.
Additionally, prescription-opioid involved deaths increased to 414 reported in 2017. In fact, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Arizona providers wrote 61.2 prescriptions for every 100 people in the state in 2017. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this is higher than the national average rate of 58.7 prescriptions per 100 people.
These numbers tell a sad and terrifying story of the need for education, awareness, and rehab Scottsdale programs. Overdoses are changing too many people's lives, often irreversibly. Now more than ever, it's important to surround yourself with the right treatment options.
Rehab Scottsdale Programs: Maricopa County Statistics
The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) investigates deaths that may potentially be due to unnatural causes. They gather data based on toxicology deaths that were certified to be related to substance use caused. Officials refer to these deaths as overdose deaths. The substances involved in these overdose deaths range from over the counter to prescription and illegal drugs.
As of August 31, 2019, data gathered by the OME showed that 925 deaths were already due to overdose in Maricopa County in the calendar year. From September 2018-August 2019, county officials noted a total of 1,328 drug-related overdose deaths. County Officials blame the majority of the overdose deaths on opioids, methamphetamines or alcohol. Of those 1,328 deaths, 898 were because of opioid overdose, with 75% of those opioids involved being fentanyl and prescription opioids.
Of the 925 reported overdose deaths in 2019, about 91% of those deaths involved more than one drug or abused substance. Tragically, 92% of those overdose deaths were determined to be accidental in nature. The sad truth about dependence and addiction to drugs is that sometimes, you don't just destroy relationships and opportunities in your life…you could lose your life altogether.
What's the most frightening statistic of all is just how many drug overdose deaths Maricopa County sees when compared to neighboring counties. According to health data compiled during 201-2014, there were 2,030 drug overdose deaths in Maricopa County. The county with the next highest drug overdose fatalities reported was Pima, with 652 deaths, followed by Yavapai with 190. When you look at the numbers, it's clear there is a significant danger for those in Maricopa County, and that's why rehab Scottsdale Programs like those at Springboard Recovery are vital and truly lifesaving.
