12-Step groups, as well as other types of support groups, can be so beneficial for someone in recovery. They are available free of charge, and they provide peer support, which is essential during the healing process.

THERE ARE SO MANY HELPFUL AND SUPPORTIVE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION RECOVERY RESOURCES IN RHODE ISLAND. THEY INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that has been around for many decades. It was founded in 1935 by two men who wanted to help each other recover from alcohol addiction. Today, meetings are attended in almost every city in the United States, and there are many countries that offer AA as well. Members come to meetings every week, where they share with others about their struggles and experiences. There are several AA meetings taking place in Rhode Island every week.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous was founded in 1955, just 20 years after AA. It was designed to be a support group option for people who are addicted to drugs. It follows a similar 12-Step program to AA, but there are some differences. A lot of people would rather go to NA meetings than AA because they like the program better. People who attend NA meetings in Rhode Island appreciate having a group of peers to get support from as they recover from drug addiction.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery meetings offer a more scientific approach to addiction recovery. They are not 12-Step based at all. They have meetings every week in many cities in Rhode Island. Members talk with one another about the various issues they are facing as they strive to stay clean and sober. SMART Recovery meetings teach people how to find the power within themselves to make changes in their lives and achieve more balance.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon is an organization that was founded for the purpose of offering support to families with addicted or alcoholic loved ones. Their website has a lot of great information that a lot of people find to be helpful. They offer many weekly meetings in Rhode Island that anyone is welcome to attend, regardless of their age. Al-Anon has been able to help many families cope with having a loved one who is abusing drugs and/or alcohol, even if they are not in recovery.

Alateen

Al-Anon offers a program for teenagers that is called Alateen. They also offer weekly support group meetings in various cities in Rhode Island. In addition to teens, young adults and older children are welcome to attend most meetings. It can be helpful for young people to talk with others their own age about the struggles they are facing.

They typically run for about 12 weeks, but this can vary, depending on the clients’ individual needs. Appointments are usually in the evenings, and many people appreciate that flexibility. There are several treatment centers in Rhode Island that offer IOPs.
