NORTH DAKOTA DRUG AND ALCOHOL DETOX PROGRAMS

Many addicts will find that they need to go through the detoxification process as the first step in recovery. In some cases, this might even be required; it all depends on the type of drug(s) the individual is addicted to and/or abusing. The purpose of detoxing is to address the physical aspect of the addiction, which means treating withdrawal symptoms.

Some people will find that their withdrawal symptoms are relatively mild, so not much treatment is needed. But others will experience mild withdrawal at first, but then it will progress into more severe symptoms that definitely need to be treated. In some cases, withdrawal can even potentially be fatal.

Some examples of common drug withdrawal symptoms include the following:

  • Intense cravings for the person’s drug(s) of choice.
  • Painful headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Depression.
  • Anxiety

Withdrawal occurs because something the body has gotten used to (the drug) has been removed from the system. It can cause the body to experience a bit of a shock until it gets used to not having it again.

Drug Detox

Detoxing off drugs is necessary for several different types of drugs during the early stages of recovery. Quitting the use of most drugs will cause withdrawal symptoms, although they may vary in their severity. Detoxing can help to remove toxins from the body that are connected to the individual’s drug use.

There are several different types of drug detox that may be used for people who are addicted to drugs. Any of the following may be recommended, depending on what a person needs:

  • Medical detox: A medically supervised detox is highly recommended for many types of drugs. It allows the person to take medications that can help alleviate their symptoms.
  • Medication assisted treatment: MAT has been able to help many people who are addicted to opioid drugs like painkillers and heroin. By using a combination of therapy and medications that have been specifically FDA approved for this purpose, withdrawal symptoms can be well-controlled.
  • Holistic detox: Holistic detox and treatment uses more natural methods to help support the body as it rids itself of dangerous toxins. It can include things like nutrition therapy, dietary changes, physical exercise and journaling.
Alcohol Detox

Alcohol is a drug just like heroin, crystal meth and cocaine are drugs. The only difference is that it is legal to purchase in the store for people who are old enough to do so. But not only is alcohol a drug, but it is also one of the most highly addictive drugs on the market.

Alcohol detox is typically a requirement for anyone who is an alcoholic. This is because of the possible complications that can arise when people stop drinking. One of those complications is the risk of delirium tremens, or DTs. DTs is a type of severe alcohol withdrawal that can afflict those who have been alcoholics for a long period of time. DTs are extremely dangerous and can even become fatal if the condition is left untreated.

Medication assisted treatment has been known to work well for alcohol withdrawal. There are medications that people can take to help alleviate their symptoms and improve their chances of a successful outcome. One of those medications is called Vivitrol, and it is an injection that is given once a month. When combined with therapy, it has shown to be very effective.

DRUG REHABILITATION CENTERS IN NORTH DAKOTA

A lot of people think that all they need to do is get through their withdrawal symptoms and then they will be recovered from their addictions. But that is not the case at all, and more treatment is needed in order for people to have the best chance at being successful. Drug rehab is the step that should come after detoxification.

The purpose of drug rehabilitation is to address the underlying issues behind the addiction. Most people have reasons for using drugs and alcohol. Some may use because they feel stressed and it is a way for them to let some of that tension go. But others may have more serious issues known as co-occurring disorders.

.

A co-occurring disorder is a mental health issue that has contributed in some way to the person’s addiction. Typically, people will use drugs as a way to self-medicate their mental health symptoms away. This is extremely common, and it is why going to drug rehab is so important. The right treatment is needed to help people recover from co-occurring disorders, which in turn can help them recover from addiction.

What Can People Expect During Drug Rehab?

Going to alcohol rehab is critical for all of the following reasons:

There is so much for people to learn about addiction recovery while they are in rehab. Relapse prevention is also something that should be covered with everyone before they finish their treatment. This can help by identifying their triggers and making an “escape plan” for when they are tempted to use again.

Going to alcohol rehab is critical for someone who is an alcoholic in recovery. As we mentioned previously, co-occurring disorders are typical for people with addictions, and that is also true for alcoholics.

The right therapy can make a big difference during alcoholism recovery. Dual diagnosis treatment may be needed for those with co-occurring disorders. This can successfully address the mental health issues they have, giving them less of a reason to use alcohol again in the future.

Why is Alcohol Rehab so Important for Recovery?

A lot of people wrongly assume that because they started using alcohol on their own, they can just stop on their own. This is because they underestimate the power of excessive drinking. It can be just as dangerous as abusing heroin or other hard drugs. But because it is legal to consume alcohol, people assume that it is harmless, which of course, it is not.

Going to alcohol rehab offers a lot of helpful benefits, such as:

  • Learning from professionals who know how to treat alcohol addiction.
  • Getting support from others who are also in recovery.
  • Getting help for the root cause of the addiction, and not just the withdrawal symptoms.
  • Learning how to prevent a relapse in the future.
  • Being able to get back on track with one’s life goals and purpose. .

INFORMATION ABOUT AFTER CARE AND CONTINUING TREATMENT

Continuing to get treatment after rehab is over is what often makes the difference between a successful recovery and getting stuck in the cycle of addiction and relapse. People often think that once they finish rehab, they are cured and there is no more work that needs to be done. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The reality is that the people who do the best after rehab are those who continue to follow up with their appointments. Many people take a “step-down” approach. This means that, for example, they may have started by getting inpatient treatment and then they transition into a lower level of care, such as an IOP , PHP or even outpatient rehab.
