FREE SUPPORT GROUPS IN MINNESOTA

Research has shown that peer support is an essential part of addiction recovery. There are several support groups available in Minnesota that can help people stop using and begin healing.

THERE ARE SO MANY HELPFUL AND SUPPORTIVE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION RECOVERY RESOURCES IN MINNESOTA. THEY INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that has been able to help millions of people all over the world. They have been around for a very long time – since 1935 – and they offer weekly support group meetings in almost every city in Minnesota. People who attend AA find that they learn more about their addictions from the others who also attend. They can get sponsors to come alongside them and help them stay on the right track. And there is never a charge for attending AA or for becoming a member.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is a lot like AA in that they both follow the 12-Steps of Recovery. But NA is different in that it is designed to help people who are addicted to any type of drug; not just alcohol. Interestingly enough, there are many alcoholics who choose to attend NA rather than AA. There are weekly NA meetings taking place regularly in Minnesota. Meetings are a time when members can come together to encourage each other and offer support.

SMART Recovery

The SMART in SMART Recovery stands for Self-Management And Recovery Training. This organization is not a 12-Step program. But what they offer is a scientific approach to addiction recovery. Through the information that is available on their website and weekly meetings, members help each other solve issues related to their substance abuse problems. SMART Recovery helps people create positive changes in their lives for the long-term. There are several SMART Recovery meetings being held in Minnesota every week.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon is an organization that was founded for the purpose of providing support to the families of addicts and alcoholics. It can be so difficult to cope with the challenges of having an addicted family member. It is easy to resort to enabling behaviors just to get through each day. Al-Anon offers several Minnesota-based meetings every week. They offer the perfect opportunity for people to come together and get the support they need.

Alateen

Young people also need support when they have parents or other family members who are battling addictions. Al-Anon offers Alateen meetings on a weekly basis in Minnesota to help them. It can be very difficult for teens, young adults and even older children to cope with a loved one’s substance abuse problem. They may not feel as though they can confide in their friends about something so personal. Alateen is there to fill that need.

ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY OPTIONS IN MINNESOTA

Although 12-Step meetings can be helpful, they may not be right for everyone. Typically, they are utilized as a form of follow-up care after a person has completed a professional treatment program. We always highly recommend for people to go to some type of rehab to ensure they start off on the right track. There are many that could be recommended.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL DETOX

Alcohol and drug detox is often an important part of the recovery process. Withdrawal symptoms can become rather severe, and treatment can help alleviate them. Also, there are complications that can occur during recovery that can become dangerous or even life-threatening. Detoxing off drugs and alcohol can help to reduce the risk of any medical emergencies.

There are some drugs for which detoxing may be required prior to moving on to rehab. They include:

Every addiction is different, which means they all require their own unique approach. There are a few different types of detox programs available in Minnesota, and they include:

INPATIENT REHABILITATION

A lot of people begin recovering from addiction by going through an inpatient rehab program first. This level of care involves staying at a treatment facility for 28 days. During that time, patients receive various types of therapy. If they need detox, a lot of rehab centers offer this service in-house. Those that do not should provide a referral for one they recommend. There are several inpatient rehab programs available in Minnesota.

INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT TREATMENT PROGRAMS

Intensive outpatient programs, or IOPs, are similar to PHPs except that appointments are held in the evenings. A lot of people appreciate that flexibility because they can continue to care for their families and go to work.

PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION PROGRAMS

Partial hospitalization programs are also called PHPs or day treatment programs. Clients come during the day to get treatment for their addictions, and appointments may be as often as five days per week. Minnesota has some excellent PHPs.

OUTPATIENT THERAPY AND REHABILITATION

Outpatient rehab typically only involves individual therapy sessions. That can make it inappropriate for someone who has not had a higher level of care. But it is often an essential part of many people’s follow-up plans.
