What Happens During Alcohol and Drug Rehab in Minneapolis?

A lot of people feel nervous about going to rehab in Minneapolis because they are unsure about what to expect. It can be scary for them to leave what they know (substance abuse) behind. We want to help people learn more about what happens during addiction treatment so they can hopefully set some of those fears aside.

Minneapolis Drug and Alcohol Detox Programs

The very first step that a person should take in addiction recovery is to go through drug or alcohol detox. Detoxing is not required for all drugs, but for some, it is essential in order to reduce their risks of serious complications. Alcohol is an excellent example, and because alcohol withdrawal can be deadly, it is important to detox properly.

Detoxing helps by ridding the body of unwanted toxins that cause withdrawal symptoms. It can ease the severity of symptoms and help the individual’s recovery go more smoothly.

Many of the people we work with are addicted to alcohol and/or opioids. Medication-assisted treatment is highly recommended in both cases. MAT involves behavioral therapy participation and the use of FDA-approved medications that are specifically tailored to help with withdrawal symptoms.

Inpatient Rehab in Minneapolis

Inpatient rehab programs involve a 28-day stay at a facility while receiving addiction treatment. For those who need a longer time to recover, long-term rehab is available, which allows patients to stay for several months if needed.

During inpatient rehab, patients participate in a wide variety of therapeutic activities. They have individual and group counseling and may also have family therapy sessions as well.

Outpatient Treatment Centers and Programs

Outpatient treatment allows people to get the addiction recovery help they need without having to stay in a hospital or private rehab center. Some types of outpatient rehab can work well for those who have never been in treatment before.

There are three mains types of outpatient rehab:

  • Partial hospitalization programsPHPs typically run during the daytime and clients stay at the program all day long. They receive therapy and medication management services while they are there.
  • Intensive outpatient programsIOPs are usually scheduled during the evening hours. This allows for more flexibility for people who work, go to school, or have other responsibilities during the day. People who attend IOPs typically go 3-5 evenings per week.
  • Outpatient therapyOutpatient addiction treatment usually only involves working with a therapist during one-on-one sessions. Clients may come to appointments up to three times per week, but they do not receive any other services in most cases.

Our treatment programs are custom tailored to your specific needs. One phone call is all it takes to start your recovery from drug & alcohol dependency

Are There Other Ways for People to Get Addiction Recovery Support in Minneapolis?

Those who are further along in their recovery journeys may be interested to know that there are additional ways for them to get support. Also, there are other resources in Minneapolis that can pair well with outpatient treatment.

12-Step Meetings and Other Support Groups

Going to a 12-Step meeting can be very beneficial for people who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. Minneapolis has many AA meetings for those who are struggling because of alcoholism. NA meetings are also available, and this organization invites anyone with any type of addiction to attend their meetings.

SMART Recovery is a non-12-Step organization that offers support groups for people with any type of addiction. Clients can come to weekly meetings or attend them online if they choose. Their website is filled with helpful information about how to recover from addiction and stay sober and clean.

Finally, families also need support when a loved one is addicted to drugs or alcohol. Al-Anon offers support groups for families, and Alateen is an extension of Al-Anon that focuses on young people. They can attend their own weekly support group meetings either in person or online.

Sober Living Homes

Recovering from an addiction can be very challenging, even when people have optimal support throughout the process. But not everyone has a healthy home environment in which to live while they work on getting clean. Sober living homes offer that type of help by providing safe places for people to live while they are in recovery.

Sober living homes have requirements that must be met by all residents. These homes do not provide their own in-house treatment options, which means residents need to find them themselves. They are required to attend them regularly and may also need to pay rent if that is not covered by their insurance. Residents may need to contribute to the home in some way such as making meals or doing other chores too.
