The Need for NA in Worcester, Massachusetts

Sometimes, drug addiction can become overwhelming in large cities like Worcester, MA. Many organizations, such as Narcotics Anonymous, have made big strides in helping people recover from their addictions. Is There a Drug Misuse Problem in Worcester, MA?

Worcester is located west of Boston. It is the second most populous city in Massachusetts. According to the Greater Worcester Community Health Assessment of 2018

  • Substance abuse was named as the second leading health issue after mental health.
  • Of the people who received treatment in Worcester in 2014:
    • 25% received for alcohol
    • 62% for heroin
    • 4% for crack/cocaine
    • 3% for marijuana
    • 3% for other drugs including meth, inhalants, club drugs, and others
  • Worcester saw a significantly higher rate of hospitalizations (338.8 per 100,000) and ED discharges (1,209.2 per 100,000) for alcohol/substance abuse than surrounding cities.
  • There were 452.8 per 100,000 hospitalizations for opioids. The opioid ED discharge rate was 315.6 per 100,000 and the opioid-related fatal overdose rate was. 43.6 per 100.000.
  • Worcester had 1,051 opioid-related overdoses (not all of them fatal) from July 2017-July 2018.
  • 5% of high school students tried marijuana before age 13.
  • 19% of high school students reported being current marijuana users (1 or more times in the last 30 days).
  • 31% of high school students report that they had used marijuana at least one time.
