Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon Meetings in Worcester, Massachusetts

Alcohol addiction can be overwhelming. Most people who are able to quit drinking have a solid support system helping them. Alcoholism is also hard on the family and friends of the drinker. Support recovery groups can help people quit drinking. It is very easy to find meetings in Worcester, Massachusetts.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a fellowship of people who had alcohol addiction problems. It is the original 12-step program, started in 1935 in Ohio. Alcoholics Anonymous is a peer-led group, they do not offer professional counseling services. There are no doctors or medical professionals, so they do not provide medical treatment or detox programs.

Membership in AA is voluntary. The only requirement is wanting to change to an alcohol-free life. Members follow the 12-step process to develop that life without alcohol controlling them.

The 12-step process has a spiritual base that can be adapted to any religion someone may follow. People who do not have a religious group can still join; many have still found the process effective. There are AA meetings available in Worcester, Massachusetts.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is another support group based on the 12-step process. They learn and follow the same 12 step process used by AA. This group is for the family and friends of an alcoholic, not the drinker. This is also a peer-led group, there are no counselors or therapists. Members share their experiences and coping strategies with each other.

Al-Anon is completely anonymous, and confidential. The groups do not keep attendance records. Many people do not even use their last name. Group members can attend meetings as often as they find it helpful. There is not a membership fee to go to meetings for support.
