Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon Meetings in Stamford, Connecticut

A lot of people can enjoy an alcoholic beverage occasionally without a problem. When people start drinking too often an addiction can happen. Alcohol Use Disorder is a serious problem that affects a lot of people and their families. Alcohol addiction support groups can make a difference. It is very easy to find a meeting in Stamford, Connecticut.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a fellowship of people who have had alcohol addiction problems. AA began in 1935 in Akron, Ohio. The group is now worldwide. Each local group is independent, but they all follow the same 12 step process to stop drinking and stay sober.

At AA meetings members share their stories and experiences with each other. They share coping strategies. They also encourage each other to continue to follow the 12 step process. At some meetings, they learn about and discuss one of the 12 steps.

AA is truly anonymous. Groups do not keep track of attendance. Members do not even have to give their last name. Alcoholics Anonymous is a peer-led group. There are no professional counseling or medical services.

What is AL-Anon

Al-Anon is a 12 step support group for friends and family members of alcoholics. Al-Anon members also learn and use the 12 step process used by Alcoholics Anonymous. Group members share their experiences and coping strategies with each other.

Al-Anon is also a peer-led group, there are no professional therapists. Members support each other and share what has been helpful in their life. This can be extremely important if a group member’s loved one will not get help for alcoholism.

Is There an Alcohol Addiction Problem in Stamford, Connecticut?

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2019 lists some statistics about alcohol use in the United States.

  • 14.5 million people aged 12 and older had Alcohol Use Disorder in 2019
  • 85.6% of people aged 18 and older have consumed alcohol at some point in their life
  • 69.5% said they drank in the last year

A report from the CDC says that one out of every six adults binge drinks four times a month. Binge drinking is five or more alcoholic drinks for men, four or more for women. This leads to a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or higher, which is considered to be drunk in every state.

Stamford, Connecticut is in Fairfield county. The Fairfield county community wellbeing index from 2019 lists some information about alcohol use. Of the people that were asked questions in the survey, 5% of adults said that at least six times per month they were binge drinking.
