Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon in San Jose, CA

Many times, people will have a drink after work or bring alcohol to the block party. Too often, one drink turns into too many and it can be hard to realize they have become addicted. Finding alcohol addiction recovery resources can be difficult. However, San Jose, California has many options for those who need them.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a group of people from all over the world who all have struggled with alcohol at some point along the way. They are a large network who support each other in their efforts to be sober. All people are accepted and the only requirement is to have a desire to change a problem with alcohol. Meetings are peer-led, free, and are available in most countries. In the US, most cities have meetings in them or close by.

AA members learn the 12-step process. This is a process that takes time and helps them overcome their addiction. When they complete their 12 steps, they can then go on to help someone else with the steps. Millions of people have been and are being helped by AA.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is a group for those whose lives have affected by someone else’s drinking. This is a space for them to come together with other people in a similar situation and offer mutual support, share experiences, frustrations, emotions and feelings. Meetings are free for this, as well. Al-Anon principles are applied to the situation they are in and this helps them bring positivity and change to their current circumstance, even if their loved one will not admit to a problem.

The 12-step process is also used by Al-Anon. These meetings are a good way for people to understand that they are not the only ones going through this and they do not have to do it alone. Al-Anon is not for the person with an alcohol problem.

Is There an Alcohol Problem in San Jose, CA?

San Jose is the third-largest city in California and the tenth-largest in the US. Located in Santa Clara County, it is an affluent city. Unfortunately, having a lot of money does not keep alcohol problems away.

The Santa Clara County Substance Abuse Assessment of 2017 had the following to report:

  • 82% of residents (18 and older) reported ever consuming alcohol.
  • 67% had an alcoholic drink in the last 30 days.
  • 59% said they had alcohol on 1-4 occasions in the last 30 days.
  • 21% said it was 11-30 occasions in the last 30 days.
  • 16% of county residents admitted to at least one binge-drinking day in the 30 days.
  • 38% of people first tried alcohol between the ages of 18 and 21. For 35%, it was between 14 and 17. 12% tried it when they were 13 or younger. Just 15% were aged 22 to 39 when they had their first drink.
  • People who started drinking younger prior to the legal drinking age had a higher rate of alcohol misuse later in life.
