What is Alateen?

Alateen is a support group for teenagers who are affected by someone else’s drinking problem. Alateen is a part of Al-Anon. These are both support groups for the families of alcoholics. Alateen is not for teenagers who have a drinking problem themselves.

Members of an Alateen group learn the 12 step process used by Alcoholics Anonymous. Alateen members follow the 12 steps. They also learn and follow the twelve traditions of Alateen. When group members all follow the twelve traditions it keeps the group unified.

The purpose of Alateen is to help other teenagers of alcoholics. They do this by following the twelve steps and the twelve traditions themselves. In the twelve traditions, it states that all Alateen groups are to stay unprofessional. That means there are no paid workers in the group.

There are no professional counselors at Alateen meetings. Adults called Group Sponsors run the meetings. Group Sponsors are members of Al-Anon that have gone through a certification process. The Group Sponsors help keep the group focused on the Alateen principles. Alateen meetings cannot happen if the Group Sponsors are not available.

During group meetings, members share their experiences with each other. They also share their coping strategies. The meetings are not a place for complaining about parents or the alcoholic person.
