The Need for Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings in Decatur, Illinois

Alcoholics Anonymous has made a huge impact in the lives of people struggling with alcohol addiction. Help is available in Decatur, Illinois for everyone that wants to stop drinking alcohol. A solid support system is a good start for breaking an alcohol addiction.

Alcohol addiction is now called alcohol use disorder by the National Institute on Alcohol abuse and Alcoholism. Their definition of Alcohol use disorder is a medical condition where a person can not stop using alcohol even though it has caused serious problems in someone’s health, social life or work life. A person can have a mild, moderate, or severe case.

A community health needs assessment put together by Decatur Memorial Hospital shared results of a survey done in July and August 2018. This survey included residents of Decatur and other parts of Macon County. In the survey 47% of the people said alcohol abuse was the top dangerous risky behavior in the community.

The Illinois Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System is a by county phone survey of residents. Binge drinking was reported by 15.6% of the people in Macon County. Heavy drinking was reported by 4.8% of the people. Binge drinking is 5+ drinks on one occasion for men, 4+ for women. Heavy drinking is two drinks per day for men, one drink per day for women.

Decatur Police ran a traffic enforcement campaign starting December 17, 2018, to January 1, 2019. During this campaign, many traffic tickets were issued. There were also 25 DUI arrests during this time period.
