Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon Meetings in Danbury, Connecticut

Being addicted to alcohol is hard on the addict and their families. Alcohol can take over the life of someone who has severe alcohol use disorder. There is hope. Support group meetings can help people stop drinking. It is very easy to find a meeting in Danbury, Connecticut.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship group of people who have had alcohol addiction problems. Anyone who wants to end their alcohol addiction can join a meeting group. AA is the first 12 step program. The book Alcoholics Anonymous was first published in 1939, it is commonly known as The Big Book. The fourth edition was published in 2001.

In a 12 step support group, members share their experiences with each other in the meetings. They also encourage each other to follow the 12 steps. The 12 steps are used as a behavior guideline to quit drinking alcohol.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is another 12 step support group. This group is not for the person who drinks too much alcohol. Al-Anon is for the family and friends of an alcoholic. Living with an alcoholic can be very stressful. An alcoholic’s behavior can cause physical or emotional pain for other people.

The Al-Anon group members also learn and follow the 12 step process. This can help them learn how to handle the emotional issues that can come from someone else’s alcohol problem. People can join Al-Anon even if their loved one is not getting help to stop drinking.

Al-Anon is completely anonymous, and confidential. There is no cost to join, but they will accept donations to cover the cost of the meeting space and materials. Al-Anon does not accept any funding from the government.

Is There an Alcohol Addiction Problem In Danbury Connecticut?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report that says 95,000 people die every year from drinking too much alcohol. That works out to 261 people dying every day because of alcohol abuse. Those deaths did not have to happen.

In a community needs survey, 9% of the adults in the survey said they needed to cut down on their alcohol or drug use. That is just a bit higher than the number of adults across the state of Connecticut that said they needed to cut back. That is quite a few people that think they drink too much.

On responsibility.org there are alcohol-related statistics by state. In 2018 there were 7,484 people arrested in the state of Connecticut for driving under the influence of alcohol. Out of those arrests, 18 people were under the age of 18. There were 115 alcohol-impaired driving deaths in 2018 in Connecticut.
