Alateen Meetings in Cottonwood, Arizona
Living with an alcoholic can be a stressful situation, especially for teenagers or children. There is a support group that is specifically for teenagers who have an alcoholic family member called Alateen. There are several meetings each week near Cottonwood, Arizona that teenagers can attend.
What is Alateen?
Alateen is one of the family support groups that are available through Al-Anon. These groups are for people who have friends and family members that have alcohol abuse problems. Alateen does not have professional counselors or therapists. This is a group of teenagers sharing their experiences with each other.
These meetings are led by one or two Group Sponsors. The Group Sponsors are adult Al-Anon members who have completed a certification process. The Group Sponsor helps the meeting stay on track and focused on the Alateen principles. For safety reasons the group cannot meet if the Group Sponsor is not there.
The Alateen meetings are not a social hangout. The purpose is to help other teenagers of alcoholics. This is not a meeting to complain about parents or other adults. The members share coping skills and other ways to build each other up.
Alateen and Al-Anon groups both learn and follow the 12-step principles of AA. Alateen members also follow the twelve traditions of Alateen. Following the twelve traditions helps maintain the unity of the group. One important thing to note: this group is not for teenagers who have a drinking problem of their own.
