What is Alcoholics Anonymous?
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international group of people who all have a common struggle: they have all had a problem with alcohol at some point in their life, This large support network helps each other toward their goal of sobriety. They accept everyone into the program with the only requirement being a desire to change their habits and problems with alcohol. They hold free meetings that are led by peers. Most countries have meetings available. In the US, there are meetings in almost every major city or not too far away.
AA developed the 12-step process to take their members through. This is a process that each individual does at their own pace and helps them as they overcome their addiction. After they have completed the steps, they can help someone else go through the steps through sponsorship. There have been millions of people who have been and are currently being helped by the efforts of AA.
Getting and staying sober is very challenging, but with the right support network and tools, it’s completely attainable.
What is Al-Anon?
Al-Anon is an organization for the people who have had their lives affected by someone else who drinks. They can meet together with others who share a common experience to offer support. They can tell their stories to each other, share frustrations, fears, feelings, emotions and hopes. These meetings are free. There are Al-Anon principles that are applied to their individual situation to help them bring change and positivity to it. This can occur even if their loved one does not take responsibility for their alcohol problem.
