Alateen: Allowing Young People to Find Hope

When a young person’s loved one is struggling because of their addiction, it can be extremely difficult to cope. Teens, older children and even young adults may not feel as though they have anyone in their lives they can talk to about how they are feeling. They may be hesitant to burden their friends with their problems. This can easily lead to them feeling isolated and alone.

Alateen is a way for young people to get support when they have a family member who is an addict. Members are able to come together for the purposes of:

  • Sharing their experiences with one another.
  • Finding strength and hope within one another.
  • Learning effective ways to cope with their problems.
  • Talking about what they are going through.
  • Encouraging one another and getting encouragement from each other.

So many people have found hope in the Alateen program. But it is also important to remember what these meetings are not as well. Alateen is not:

  • A place for teenagers to hang out with each other.
  • A place for teens and young people to come and complain about their parents or others in their lives.
  • A place for young people to get help with their own drinking or drug use problems.
  • A professional therapy program.

  • 75 people in the county died because of suicide that same year in the county.
  • That number represents 34.2 people out of every 100,000 people in the county.

  • Need for suicide prevention.
  • Increased knowledge on the impact of trauma on mental health.

  • Substance abuse issues.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alateen Meetings in Camp Verde

Young people often struggle mentally when someone they love has an addiction to drugs or alcohol. Alateen meetings are there to provide them with support and answer the questions they may have.

The following are a few questions that teens typically ask.

Why do people drink too much?

People consume alcohol because they like the way it makes them feel; at least when they first start drinking. Eventually, people who drink excessively may do because they have lost control over this behavior. They feel compelled to drink because if they do not, they may start going through withdrawal. Once alcohol use gets to this point, people are typically unable to manage their lives. This is when most people consider them to be alcoholics.

Is there a cure for alcoholism?

We wish we could say that there is a cure for alcoholism. But unfortunately, that is not the case. Alcoholism is a known, chronic disease, and it must be treated as such. There are some excellent ways to treat it, but as of right now, there is no cure for it.

Of course, that does not mean that someone who is an alcoholic is destined to drink excessively for the rest of their lives. It is possible for people to stop drinking and go on to live full, healthy lives. But once a person has stopped drinking, consuming even one alcoholic beverage could cause them to relapse.

If I have an alcoholic family member, will I become an alcoholic too?

People who have alcoholic family members are not destined to become alcoholics themselves. But they do carry a great risk for alcoholism. It can run in families, which is why it is so important to be aware of the risks.

Is it possible to get an alcoholic to stop drinking?

Young people need to understand that just as they did not cause alcoholism, they also cannot control it or cure it. It is not possible for teens to get their loved ones to stop drinking.

How long does it take for people to realize they are alcoholics?

A lot of alcoholics realize early on that they have drinking problems. But they are not always willing to admit it to anyone out loud. Every person is different; for one, it may only take a few months of excessive drinking behaviors, whereas another person could remain in denial for years.
