What is Narcotics Anonymous?

Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that was founded in 1953. It is based on the 12 Steps of Recovery, similar to what people utilize during Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Today, NA meetings are taking place on a weekly basis in almost 140 countries all over the world.

NA meetings offer a group atmosphere for people to come to and get the support they need to stop using drugs, or stay abstinent from drugs. Narcotics Anonymous does not differentiate between drugs, and there are many people who are alcoholics who prefer NA over AA meetings.

This is a free program, and it is one that is run by people who are also in recovery. NA meetings are not run by professionals, and it only provides peer support. But this type of therapy has been shown to be essential for people who are in recovery.

Narcotics Anonymous Meetings or Drug Rehab? Which is Best?

For those who have never had any type of addiction treatment or peer support for substance abuse, it can be difficult to know what type of assistance to choose. Some people may truly need to be in a professional rehab program. Others may not, and could do very well with attending NA meetings every week.

The following are indicative of someone who might need to consider professional treatment at a drug rehab:

  • Quitting the use of drugs is leading to severe withdrawal symptoms.
  • The person has been using drugs for quite some time; typically, a year or more.
  • The individual is addicted to more than one drug, or to a drug and alcohol.
  • There is a history of relapsing.
  • The person is addicted to an opioid, stimulant or benzodiazepine drug.

Attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings can be very helpful as well. This course of action might be appropriate for someone who:

  • Has already gone through a drug rehab program, such as inpatient treatment, or an IOP.
  • Has not been using for a very long time.
  • Has not yet gotten addicted to the drug they are using; they are only abusing it at this time.
  • Is only using one drug.
  • Is not having severe withdrawal symptoms.

When in doubt, it is always a good idea to get a professional recommendation. Talking with a local drug treatment program can allow people to speak with someone who can tell them what steps they need to take to get the right level of support.
