Drug and Alcohol Rehab: What Happens During Treatment?

When a person decides to seek help for their addiction, they need to treat both the physical and the mental aspects of the addiction. This is what rehab does. Detox and various kinds therapy together are the best way to get a person closer to recovery. It is important to know what happens during both of these treatment types, both of which can be available in the Ashtabula area.

Detoxification

The process of removing harmful toxins from the body is called detoxification. The longer someone uses drugs or alcohol, the more the toxins from those substances build up in their body. It is hard for the body to get rid of them on its own. Detox can help ease the withdrawal symptoms the person will go through.

Sometimes a medically supervised detox is recommended. It can be an effective way to detox and it is easier and safer on the person going through it. This is always done under the care of a qualified physician and it drastically reduces the chance of relapse.

Rehab and Therapy

After detox, rehab therapy can begin. This is what deals with the mental side of the addiction. Many times, a combination or individual, groups and/or family therapy sessions will be utilized.

The professional who is helping an addicted person will need to figure out the root cause of the addiction. Common among addicts are co-occurring disorders. This is when there are underlying mental health disorders that come along with the addiction or caused it to begin with.

Types of Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities in Ashtabula, OH

There are a variety of drug and alcohol treatment facilities in the Ashtabula, Ohio area. The needs of the person will best determine what option is best for them.

Outpatient Treatment Options

Some people who are already familiar with rehab may want to be able to attend their meetings but not have to stay in a rehab center. They could do outpatient rehab. They would be able continue their daily family and work responsibilities while being committed to their recovery program.

This is recommended for people whose addiction is a more mild form. For the chance of relapse to be low, they have to stay focused on keeping up with the program and making every appointment.

Inpatient Treatment Options

Inpatient rehab programs are programs where people check in to stay for recovery. Working with a professional on staff at the facility, they will go through detox and therapy while there. The stay can typically last for 28-days, but might need to be long-term in some cases.

Sober Living Homes

Some people need to be around people who can support them or keep them accountable for a while after their program is over. A sober living home may be recommended for them at this point. They would move into a house with other people who are in the same situation. They would be expected to follow strict rules, such as paying rent and going through drug testing, but they would have the freedom to work, go to school and go out and do as they wanted.

12-Step Programs

There are millions of people who are helped by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These groups have a 12-step format, have meetings led by peers and offer accountability for as long as a participant wants it. Ashtabula has meetings for both throughout the week.

Traveling to Arizona for Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Some might stay in Ashtabula for rehab, but there are some good reasons to consider traveling out of state for rehab, too. Some of those reasons could be:

  • To develop new habits: addicts develop bad habits during their addiction. They have places, people and/or things that trigger them and send them back into their addictive behaviors. Being in Arizona for rehab gives them a needed separation from these triggers and habits and gives them the chance to form new habits.
  • A commitment to finish the program: every program participant can leave the program any time they want to because rehab is voluntary. They can walk out and go home. However, being at a rehab in Arizona, it is harder to walk out because there is nowhere for them to go. They are also responsible for their plane ticket back to Ashtabula.
  • To limit distractions: if a person has too many distractions at home, they can lack the appropriate focus that rehab needs. Being out of state can leave the distractions at home and help the person remain focused on their own recovery.
  • To protect privacy: many people feel as though friends, family or acquaintances will judge them for going to rehab. They value their privacy and do not want to risk seeing someone else from the program out in public. If they were in rehab in Arizona, their choice can stay very private as they are not likely to know anyone there.
  • To experience different facilities: every rehab facility is different and they cater to different needs. Without properly researching different facilities, a person may not know about specialized treatments somewhere else. Ashtabula may not offer the programs that Arizona does.
  • To start a new life: a lot of addicts have made addiction part of their identity. People know them as an addict and it can be hard to change other people’s judgements. They want to go to rehab for a fresh start. They want to create a new, true identity and learn how to,care for themself, away from the judgements of the world around them. This would be easier to do being in Arizona, away from people who know them.
