Attending 12-Step meetings or SMART Recovery meetings are often an essential part of a quality aftercare program in California. This is such an important part of the recovery process because it is where a bulk of the healing process takes place.

Free Support Group Options in California

There are many support groups located in California that are available to help people who are struggling because of their substance abuse problems.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that was first formed in the 1930s by two men who had the desire to stop drinking. From there, it grew, and today, AA provides support to people all over the world. There are several AA meetings taking place in California every week in virtually every city in the state. There, people can go to get support from their peers to help them stop drinking and stay sober.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous was formed in the 1950s to help people who wanted support for drug addiction recovery. While their primary focus is on working with people who are addicted to drugs, there are many recovering alcoholics who attend NA meetings as well. There are many NA meetings taking place in California – as well as worldwide – on a weekly basis. Participants are encouraged to come and share their stories or just listen as group members talk about their experiences.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery is not 12-Step based at all. Instead, they rely on a more scientific approach to help people change their addictive behaviors. They have weekly meetings all over the State of California, and their website is also filled with helpful information.

Al-Anon Meetings

Al-Anon is an organization that was founded to provide support to the families of recovering addicts and alcoholics. They offer weekly support groups in California, as well as in other countries. Family members are invited to come and get the help and encouragement they need.

Alateen Meetings

Alateen is actually an extension of Al-Anon, and they offer weekly support group meetings for teens, young adults, and at times, older children. Participants are young people who have addicted loved ones that they are concerned about. There are many Alateen meetings being held on a weekly basis in California.

California Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers

Even though 12-Step groups and other types of support groups can be beneficial, they are not always the best answer. This is especially true for people who have never had any type of professional treatment before. Quite often, drug and alcohol treatment is needed to help people get on the right track.

There are several options available in California for people in need of professional treatment for addiction.

Drug and Alcohol Detox

The first step in addiction recovery for many people is often drug and alcohol detox. Detoxing is vitally important because it addresses the physical side of the addiction and helps with withdrawal symptoms.

The type of detox that is recommended will depend on the type of drug a person has been using. They may need a combination of any of the following:

The detoxification process can be handled by many different facilities. There are hospitals in California that offer this service as well as standalone detox centers. Also, many inpatient programs offer detox in-house as a part of their services.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Centers

Inpatient drug and alcohol rehab involves a 28-day stay at a treatment program in California. Patients come to receive therapy and get the help they need to stop using substances. Some inpatient programs may also include detox services.

Patients should always receive personalized treatment plans when they go to inpatient rehab. These treatment plans will indicate the type of therapy they need during their recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment Programs

Intensive outpatient programs, or IOPs, can be an excellent alternative to inpatient treatment for some people. After detoxing (if necessary), clients can enroll in an IOP that offers a more flexible option for rehab, but that still gives them the time and attention they need.

California IOPs are typically run during the evening hours, and people may attend between 3-5 times a week, depending on their needs. They participate in various types of therapy and may be required to submit to drug testing.

Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial hospitalization programs are similar to IOPs in that they provide outpatient treatment. But PHPs in California are held during the day and clients come for the majority of the day to get help for their addictions.

During a PHP, a patient will participate in both group and individual therapy sessions. They may also have other types of treatment, depending on their unique needs.

Traditional Outpatient Treatment

A more traditional outpatient rehab option involves working with a therapist 1-3 times a week. This level of care may not be appropriate for those who have never had any type of rehab before. But it is often a part of many follow-up plans after a higher level of treatment has been completed in California.
